What is Physical Performance?

Physical performance basically has to do with an individual’s ability to stay physically fit using different muscles in the body. Activities that enhance physical performance include sports and exercise. Sports as defined by Dictionary.com is “an athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature, as racing, baseball, tennis, golf, bowling, wrestling, boxing, hunting, fishing, etc.,” while exercise is “bodily or mental exertion, especially for the sake of training or improvement of health.”

In addition to sports and exercise, there are several natural discoveries that are known to enhance physical performance. They include good nutrition and herbs. Keep in mind that staying fit and healthy is not just for the athlete or power lifter, we all need it as much as they do. Let’s examine how these translate to peak physical performance and sound health in the long run for both the athlete and the non-athlete.

According to Dr. Virender Sodhi, the “benefits of exercise…provide tremendous protection for health in the long-term.” Researchers have revealed the positive effect of exercise to the body, for instance, it is on record that regular exercise can reduce the occurrence of cardiovascular and inflammatory diseases.

Physical activity also promotes harmonious relationship between respiratory system, cardiovascular system, nervous system, and endocrine (hormonal) system.” – Dr. Virender SodhI. When you make physical exercise a part of your daily routine, your heart and other vital organs in your body will be in good shape; this translates into physical fitness as will be reflected in your physical performance.

Benefits of Good Nutrition

The positive effect of balanced diet to our health cannot be over emphasized. Poor nutrition will always result in poor health and poor physical performance, whereas, a diet with the right nutrients in their right proportions taken at the right time will always enhance your health and up your physical performance. Sports nutritionists, Barbara Lewin and Jill Pluhar have adviced that your diet should contain more of whole foods and natural nutrition than processed ones if you must keep fit and healthy. Some important whole foods and natural nutrients to include in your diet as advised are:

  • Nuts and Butter
  • Beans and Legumes
  • Pasta
  • Berries
  • Bananas
  • Chocolate Milk
  • Quinoa
  • Salmon and
  • Cruciferous Veggies

The above listed foods are nutritious and each contains at least one food nutrient that makes up a balanced diet. They’re good for both the athlete and non-athlete so long as the goal is to keep fit and healthy and to achieve elite physical performance.

Herbs are also known for their medicinal qualities and their ability to enhance physical performance and overall health. Some examples worthy of mention include Arjuna and Ashwagandha.
